WhatsApp WARNING – Why you should NOT use this ‘new’ feature

WHATSAPP users are being warned about a new scam which suggests the popular service can now be customised with a range of colours. Here’s why you shouldn’t click on this link.

WhatsApp users across the world are being urged not to click on a new spam message which teases an option to customise the app.

which was first spotted by reddit user yuexist, states that, “Now you can change your WhatsApp and leave it with your favourite colour.”

As soon as the message is received on a phone, fans of the popular app are then asked to share the message with 12 friends to activate and verify the new custom colour feature.

Once users have ‘verified’ themselves, they are then told that WhatsApp’s colors can only be used via a desktop and, to make the new feature work, they are asked to install an extension called BlackWhats from the Chrome Web Store.

However, the message and extension actually appear to be fake and could end up with users installing nasty adware along with infecting 12 of their friends at the same time.WhatsApp is the world’s most popular messaging app but you probably don’t know all of the tricks and features hidden up its sleeve. This isn’t the first time WhatsApp users have been victims of scam messages.

Earlier this year a message was sent millions of times stating that, from today, “WhatsApp will become chargeable.”

It then went on to warn users that the only way to stop the daily fee is to forward the message to “at least 10 contacts.”

With WhatsApp revealing it will always remain free this message was clearly a hoax and users were warned not to forward it on to their friends.

Having given advice on how to avoid such hoaxes, WhatsApp suggests users don’t interact with messages that instruct you to forward the message on, those which promise rewards or any which claim to be from WhatsApp itself.

“We always advise you to block the sender, disregard the message and delete it,” the company said.

Although this latest colour changing feature might be fake there is a new WhatsApp extension that is 100 per cent real.

The Opera browsing software, has just rolled out a major update which now includes Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Telegram icons within the browser.

This allows users to access these apps with one simple click.

After you log in to the social sites, there are two ways of using this feature: you can open it in overlay or pin it side-by-side with your current tab. Pinning a communicator allows you to combine online chatting with a full browsing experience.

You can also decide which of the messengers to enable in your sidebar by selecting them under ‘Customise start page.’

INSTAGRAM LAUNCHES A LITE APP FOR LOW-END ANDROID DEVICES

Instagram has released a lightweight version of its Android app that should be easier to install and browse on devices short on storage space and on spotty connections.

TechCrunch notes that the new app, which weighs in at just 573KB, is 1/55th the size of the original app at 33MB. Naturally, you’ll find it a little lighter on functionality too: there’s no messaging or the ability to upload videos right now.

The launch is part of Facebook’s approach to reaching the next billion people who will come online for the first time in developing countries, mostly using low-cost mobile devices with limited access to connectivity and data.

Making its apps more easier to download and perform well on low-end devices is key to growing its user base around the world. To that end, Facebook made Lite versions of its apps for its social network and Messenger available years ago. Twitter has one too, and Google recently launched an optimized version of Android – complete with a suite of its essential apps – to address these needs in emerging markets.

Instagram’s been on a roll lately. It added 300 million users in a little over a year to reach 1 billion last week, and has tacked on loads more features to its service recently, including group video calls, support for longer videos in what it’s calling IGTV, tools for curating saved posts, and improving discovery.

SCAMMERS ABUSE MULTILINGUAL DOMAIN NAMES

Cyber-criminals are abusing multilingual character sets to trick people into visiting phishing websites.

The non-English characters allow scammers to create “lookalike” sites with domain names almost indistinguishable from legitimate ones.

Farsight Security found scam sites posing as banks, loan advisers and children’s brands Lego and Haribo.

Smartphone users are at greater risk as small screens make lookalikes even harder to spot.

The Farsight Security report looked at more than 100 million domain names that use non-English character sets – introduced to make the net more familiar and usable for non-English speaking nations – and found about 27% of them had been created by scammers.

It also uncovered more than 8,000 separate characters that could be abused to confuse people.

Farsight founder Paul Vixie, who wrote much of the software underpinning the net’s domain names told the BBC: “Any lower case letter can be represented by as many as 40 different variations.”

And many internationalised versions added just a tiny fleck or mark that was not easy to see.

Eldar Tuvey, founder and head of security company Wandera, said it had also seen an upsurge in phishing domains using different ways of forming characters.

In particular, it had seen an almost doubling of the number of scam domains created using an encoding system called punycode over the past few months.

And phishing gangs were using messages sent via mobile apps to tempt people into clicking on the similar-looking links.

“They are targeting specific groups,” Mr Tuvey said.

And research had established people were three times more likely to fall for a phishing scam presented on their phone.

“To phish someone, you just have to fool them once,” Mr Tuvey said. “Tricking them into installing malware is much more work.”

GOOGLE MAKES $550M STRATEGIC INVESTMENT IN CHINESE E-COMMERCE FIRM JD.COM

Google has been increasing its presence in China in recent times, and today it has continued that push by agreeing to a strategic partnership with e-commerce firm JD.com, which will see Google purchase $550 million worth of shares in the Chinese firm.

Google has made investments in China, released products there and opened offices that include an AI hub, but now it is working with JD.com largely outside of China. In a joint release, the companies said they would “collaborate on a range of strategic initiatives, including joint development of retail solutions” in Europe, the U.S. and Southeast Asia.

The goal here is to merge JD.com’s experience and technology in supply chain and logistics — in China, it has opened warehouses that use robots rather than workers — with Google’s customer reach, data and marketing to produce new kinds of online retail.

Initially, that will see the duo team up to offer JD.com products for sale on the Google Shopping platform across the word, but it seems clear that the companies have other collaborations in mind for the future.

JD.com is valued at around $60 billion, based on its NASDAQ share price, and the company has partnerships with the likes of Walmart and it has invested heavily in automated warehouse technology, drones and other “next-generation” retail and logistics.

The move for a distribution platform like Google to back a service provider like JD.com is interesting since the company, through search and advertising, has relationships with a range of e-commerce firms, including JD.com’s arch rival Alibaba.

But it is a sign of the times for Google, which has already developed relationships with JD.com and its biggest backer Tencent, the $500 billion Chinese internet giant. All three companies have backed Go-Jek, the ride-hailing challenger in Southeast Asia, while Tencent and Google previously inked a patent-sharing partnership and have co-invested in startups such as Chinese AI startup XtalPi.
