Apple Intelligence development at least 2 years behind industry leaders, claims report

Apple is making significant efforts to expand its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, but a recent internal assessment suggests the company is falling behind its competitors.

According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, internal research found that Apple’s Siri lags behind AI models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT in performance.

The analysis revealed that ChatGPT is 25 per cent more accurate than Siri and can answer 30 per cent more questions, raising concerns within Apple about its competitive standing.

The findings suggest that Apple’s generative AI technology is currently more than two years behind the likes of OpenAI and other industry leaders. Although Apple has made progress, the report highlights the challenges the company faces in catching up within the fast-moving AI space.

Despite these setbacks, Apple continues to push AI-driven features across its product line. The latest iPad mini, for instance, comes equipped with hardware designed to support Apple’s new AI platform, called Apple Intelligence.

However, users will have to wait for a post-launch software update to unlock these capabilities, which may frustrate early adopters.

Apple’s history of catching up with technology trends may work in its favour. Its ability to quickly roll out updates across a vast ecosystem of devices could provide an edge as it races to close the gap in AI.

The company is already planning to introduce AI enhancements across other products, including future models of the iPhone SE, MacBooks, and potentially the Vision Pro headset.

While Apple has the resources, brand loyalty, and a robust ecosystem to make strides in AI, matching the rapid pace of innovation from companies like OpenAI and Google remains a challenge.

For now, Apple seems to be focusing on enhancing other areas, such as camera improvements and user experience, which continue to resonate with its customers more than AI features.

Although AI isn’t yet the central selling point for Apple products, the company is likely betting on steady progress over time. Whether it can eventually rival the capabilities of its competitors remains to be seen, but for now, the race to lead in AI continues.
