Apple has launched its latest AI-powered smartphone, the iPhone 16e, in a bid to gain market share in emerging markets such as African countries and India, where it has been ramping up its focus.
The technology giant highlighted that the iPhone 16e is compatible with its AI software, Apple Intelligence, which had faced multiple delays since being announced last year alongside the iPhone 15 range.
With Apple Intelligence, users can remove objects from images, create emojis, and engage in typed conversations with Siri.
The iPhone 16e is also integrated with ChatGPT, allowing users to access the AI software for free without creating an account, both within Apple Writing tools and Siri.
The device features a 48-megapixel single-lens camera with a telephoto lens for extreme close-up shots. It has a 6.1-inch OLED display and a CPU that is 80% faster than the chip inside the iPhone 11.
Apple will sell the iPhone 16e from US$599 SIM-free, with storage options of 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. It will be available in 59 countries, including India, Malaysia, South Africa, and Türkiye, though some Apple Intelligence features may not be available in all regions due to language localization.
IDC devices VP Francisco Jeronimo said: “With the iPhone 16e priced at $599, Apple has placed itself to shake up the mid-market by expanding its affordable range. By targeting a price-sensitive demographic, Apple is also opening the door to consumers who might otherwise opt for an older or refurbished iPhone or switch to Android alternatives.
“This approach reflects Apple’s strategic intent to expand its market reach without compromising on innovation, by offering more people early on high-end features such as the A18 chip, a premium camera, Apple Intelligence or satellite features.
