The Director of the FBI has defended covering up the webcam on his computer with a piece of tape, describing it as a common sense security measure.

Speaking at a conference at the Center for Strategic and International Studies this week, James Comey said: “There’s some sensible things you should be doing, and that’s one of them.

“You go into any government office and we all have the little camera things that sit on top of the screen. They all have a little lid that closes down on them.

“You do that so that people who don’t have authority don’t look at you. I think that’s a good thing.”

Comey was subject to ridicule on social media earlier this year after he first using tape to cover up his computer’s camera up, The Hill reports.

During a discussion on privacy at Kenyon College in April, Comey told a Q&A audience: “I saw something in the news, so I copied it.

“I put a piece of tape – I have obviously a laptop, personal laptop — I put a piece of tape over the camera.

“Because I saw somebody smarter than I am had a piece of tape over their camera.”

Speaking this week, he said: “I hope people lock their cars. Lock your doors at night… if you have an alarm system, you should use it.”

“It’s not crazy that the FBI director cares about personal security as well,” the FBI director added. “So I think people ought to take responsibility for their own safety and security.”

In June it emerged that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg also tapes over the camera and microphone on his MacBook, when he posted a photo showing his laptop in the background.
