It’s rare to find a 16-inch Windows laptop that can truly make it from morning to night without begging for a charger — but HP’s new EliteBook 8 G1a finally gets it right. This refreshed take on the former EliteBook 800 series focuses on efficiency, cool-running hardware, and reliable performance, all wrapped in a design built for business users who need a no-nonsense machine that simply works.
I tested the 16-inch AMD configuration, specced with 32GB DDR5-5600 RAM, 512GB storage, and an AMD Ryzen Pro 350 capable of hitting 5 GHz. It’s a solid pro setup with more than enough muscle for productivity work, multitasking across dozens of tabs, and even local AI tasks.
A Highly Configurable Workhorse
The EliteBook 8 G1a comes in a wide range of configurations, starting around $849 and scaling past $2,400, depending on processor choice (AMD or Intel) and memory/storage needs. This flexibility makes it attractive for both individual professionals and enterprise rollouts.
Just don’t expect it to look luxurious. While the keyboard and trackpad feel comfortable, the overall design is intentionally plain. My review unit even had a slight panel separation under the trackpad — though snapping it back fixed it permanently.
Thoughtful I/O for Professionals
HP clearly designed this machine with real workflows in mind. The port selection includes:
A nice touch: the more powerful ports are grouped on the left, making it easy to keep monitors there while using the right-side ports for accessories like a mouse dongle.
Display: Functional, Not Flashy
The 16-inch WUXGA (1920×1200) matte IPS display hits 400 nits and cuts glare extremely well. It’s perfectly serviceable for office work but won’t impress creative pros. For a machine that costs $1,249 in this configuration, a more premium panel would have been nice — but battery efficiency clearly took priority.
Speakers and Webcam: Average but Reliable
-
Speakers: Loud enough, but standard laptop quality. Fine for meetings.
-
Webcam: A 5MP IR camera that looks best at 720p. Anything below that gets grainy unless lighting is excellent.
Nothing standout — but no major complaints either.
Surprisingly Portable for a 16-Inch
At 3.7 pounds and just 0.6 inches thick, the EliteBook 8 G1a is easy to carry around. Rounded edges and a slim profile help it slip into a bag without fuss.
Runs Cool — Impressively Cool
One of the biggest wins is thermal performance. The laptop stays remarkably cool, even during heavier workloads. The fans aren’t silent, but quieter than average — and definitely comfortable enough for all-day lap use.
Battery Life That Finally Delivers
HP claims up to 17 hours of battery life, and real-world performance is impressively close. I consistently finished a full workday, video calls included, with around 30% remaining. Overnight standby drain is minimal.
This is, without exaggeration, one of the best battery performers I’ve tested in a 16-inch Windows laptop this year.
Performance: Snappy and Reliable
The EliteBook 8 G1a delivers excellent day-to-day performance and even benchmarks a bit higher than expected for its class. It’s responsive in:
The display limits its appeal for serious creative work, but the hardware itself is more than capable.
A Bit of Gaming? Sure — Within Reason
Older or lightweight games run fine (yes, even World of Warcraft Classic), but modern, graphics-heavy titles aren’t going to shine here. This is a business machine first.
