From video call filters to AI chatbot memory: WhatsApp goes Instagram with new features in the works

For many years, millions of WhatsApp users have noticed that the platform increasingly resembles Instagram, which isn’t surprising given that Instagram is its sister platform under the Meta umbrella.

This observation is becoming more accurate with each update to the popular messaging platform. Most recently, it has been actively enhancing its status-sharing experience and has introduced a function that allows users to like status updates as one would on Instagram and Facebook.

These status likes are private and visible only to the owner of the post.

Additionally, WhatsApp is rolling out a private mention feature.

This allows users to privately tag others in a status update, notifying them and enabling them to reshare the story.

“These features are now starting to roll out and will be available globally to users soon.

“We’ll be bringing more features to Status and the Updates tab over the next few months to make it easier to stay closest to those who matter most,” the company said.

Earlier in October, WhatsApp announced plans to make video calls more “fun and expressive” by introducing backgrounds and filters. These new effects allow users to personalise their calls by switching between different backgrounds and applying filters to their faces.

“Filters are designed to help you create a more playful atmosphere, whether that’s adding a splash of colour or creating a more artistic feel for your video. With backgrounds, you can keep your surroundings private and transport yourself to a cosy coffee shop or comfortable living room for a cleaner and more polished look,” the company announced.

Users can choose from 10 filters and 10 backgrounds. Filter options include Warm, Cool, Black & White, Light Leak, Dreamy, Prism Light, Fisheye, Vintage TV, Frosted Glass, and Duo Tone, while background options include Blur, Living Room, Office, Cafe, Pebbles, Foodie, Smoosh, Beach, Sunset, Celebration, and Forest.

“We’re also adding Touch Up and Low Light options that can help you feel more confident and comfortable by naturally enhancing the look and brightness of your environment, making your video calls more vibrant and enjoyable,” the platform added.

What else is coming

If you thought that liking emojis and the layout of stories were the only ways WhatsApp plans to emulate Instagram, think again. The latest WhatsApp beta has revealed that the platform is experimenting with a feature that allows users to search and add soundtracks to their story updates.

This update was revealed in the latest WhatsApp Beta version 2.24.22.11 for Android. If this update progresses beyond the planning phase, it will certainly make stories more engaging.

Beta testing is a phase where users get access to new and upcoming features before they are officially released to the public.

AI memory

Another feature reportedly in the works is the AI chatbot memory. This could enable the Meta AI chatbot to remember various details about users, providing more personalised and accurate responses.

While not yet available to the public, this update is linked to the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.22.9, although beta testers are currently unable to test it.
