Google Introduces AI Tool to Aid Scientists, Generate Research

Tech giant Google has introduced the AI Co-Scientist system, an innovative artificial intelligence tool designed to assist scientists in generating research hypotheses and planning experiments.

The AI Co-Scientist system is described by Google as an assistive tool, not a replacement for human expertise, aimed at supporting researchers in forming novel hypotheses, particularly in complex fields such as disease modelling and molecular biology.

Built on Google’s Gemini 2.0 model, the AI Co-Scientist system allows researchers to specify scientific goals in natural language.

It then suggests testable hypotheses, summarises relevant published literature, and proposes possible experimental approaches.

“AI Co-Scientist is a collaborative tool to help experts gather research and refine their work—it’s not meant to automate the scientific process,” Google stated in a blog post.

The company is eager to see how researchers will utilise the system. This development comes as AI plays an increasingly significant role in scientific research, with companies and institutions exploring its potential to accelerate discoveries in medicine, climate science, and materials engineering.
