Google plans to make its Gemini chatbot available to children under 13 with accounts supervised by parents through Family Link, The New York Times reports, citing emails that users have begun receiving.
In the letters, Google explains that children will be able to use Gemini for learning, homework help, and story-telling. At the same time, the company emphasizes that AI is not without its flaws, so it advises parents to teach children critical thinking, fact-checking, and avoiding entering personal information.
Gemini will only be accessible to Family Link accounts that parents create with their child’s name and birthdate. Google says that children’s data will not be used to train models, and the chatbot will have restrictions to prevent inappropriate content.
At the same time, Google warns that even with filters, a child may encounter content that parents will consider undesirable. The first time they log into Gemini, the family will receive an additional notification, and access can be turned off through Family Link.
