Google will stop sending SMS alerts for Google Calendar from June 27

In an official post from Google, the company has declared that it will stop sending Google Calendar alerts via text messages. The official post stated, “Starting on June 27th, 2015, SMS notifications from Google Calendar will no longer be sent. SMS notifications launched before smartphones were available. Now, in a world with smartphones and notifications, you can get richer, more reliable experiences on your mobile device, even offline.”

Earlier, even feature phones were able to receive alerts using text message services. Google has decided to put a full stop on this service by making it an application centric feature.

The search giant has declared June 27 as the last date when it will send the alerts via text. After that day the users will have to switch to the smartphone application to receive alerts in the form of notifications.

The Google Calendar application comes with the new material design and it syncs with your email to update the calendar automatically. The application provides smart suggestions to fill in entries quickly and works with other third party calendars to sync events.
