New Study Warns: ChatGPT and Other AI Models Show Bias Against Humans

What if the AI tools we increasingly rely on don’t actually have our backs? A new study suggests just that—revealing a surprising and unsettling trend: today’s most advanced large language models (LLMs), including those behind ChatGPT, may secretly prefer other AI-generated content over human-made work.

The Research Behind “AI-AI Bias”

The findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, highlight what researchers are calling “AI-AI bias.” In simple terms, when these models are asked to choose between a human-written and AI-written description of things like products, research papers, or movies, they overwhelmingly pick the AI’s version.

To test this, the team analyzed models like OpenAI’s GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and Meta’s Llama 3.1-70B. Across the board, the results were consistent: LLMs preferred AI-generated content, with GPT-4 showing the strongest bias. The effect was most pronounced in product-related choices, raising serious questions about how these tools could shape markets, hiring, and beyond.

Are AIs Just Better Writers?

You might think this bias simply reflects higher quality AI writing. But researchers controlled for that by bringing in human evaluators. Interestingly, humans showed only a slight preference for AI-generated descriptions—nowhere near as dramatic as the AIs themselves. This suggests the bias isn’t about quality but something baked into how these models “see” the world.

Why It Matters for the Future

This isn’t just academic theory. We’re already in a world where employers use AI tools to filter job applications, universities rely on algorithms to evaluate research, and platforms use recommendation engines to shape what we see. If AI consistently favors AI-generated work, human applicants, creators, and thinkers could be systematically sidelined.

The researchers warn of a possible “gate tax”—a new layer of digital inequality where only those with access to advanced AI tools can compete, further deepening the digital divide. For individuals and businesses without the resources to keep up, being human could become a disadvantage in itself.

Self-Reinforcing Loops and AI Pollution

There’s also a more subtle risk: AI training on its own outputs. As the internet fills with AI-generated content, new models are being trained on data that already carries AI fingerprints. This recursive loop could worsen the bias, making future models even more inclined to favor their own kind—while leaving human contributions undervalued or ignored.

What Can Humans Do?

Jan Kulveit, one of the study’s co-authors, offered blunt advice: if you know AI might be evaluating your work, consider running it through an LLM to optimize it for AI tastes—even if it means sacrificing some human touch. It’s a sobering reminder that we may soon need AI to stand out in a world increasingly run by AI itself.

The Bigger Picture

This research adds fuel to the growing debate about AI ethics, fairness, and accountability. While bias in AI isn’t new—think of facial recognition misidentifications or algorithmic discrimination in hiring—this study highlights a fresh, unsettling angle: models showing favoritism not just between groups of humans, but between humans and machines.
