HUAWEI surprised the world with their consumer-ready Mate XT tri-fold phone.

However, they are NOT the first company to present such idea as TECNO has buckled up their seatbelts first. Currently, they’re continuing to race around the tri-foldable race track alongside the Chinese and Korean giants.

ICYMI, TECNO’s PHANTOM Ultimate 2 made its appearance last August 2024 — precisely 15 days before HUAWEI made the Mate XT available on their retail store shelves.

The physical debut of TECNO’s second phone concept was then unveiled on the MWC 2025 show floor in Barcelona.

And just like HUAWEI’s tri-folding phone, the PHANTOM Ultimate 2 shares the same design language — a combination of inward and outward folding screens.

However, the new PHANTOM Ultimate G Fold concept is said to showcase dual inward-folding screens. It’s also said that it’s engineered to be the thinnest of its kind.

This won’t be possible though without all the engineering breakthroughs done by everyone at TECNO — especially in terms of flexible display layering and hinge miniaturization.

From the name itself, the upcoming PHANTOM Ultimate G Fold Concept will showcase an innovative G-Style design.

With the newer folding mechanism, it has an inner display that will fold inward twice.

Not only it can protect the flexible screen from being exposed when not in use. It can also help avoid unwanted scratches from impacts and other display abnormalities.

This is TECNO’s direct answer to the black screen dilemma encountered by a handful of Mate XT users.

When unfolded, it’s expected to have an expansive display bigger than the current line of regular foldables.

The PHANTOM Ultimate G Fold concept is also said to have multi-angle hovering functionality for laptop-like usability.

And just like regular book-style foldables, it will retain the outer cover screen to keep the classic smartphone feel.

Not much has been shared such as the specific display sizes nor the chipset that runs inside. However, an insider suggests that TECNO has been making a good progress with this new breed of tri-foldable.

More details will be revealed when the concept officially launches mid-July — just a month early before the first anniversary of the PHANTOM Ultimate 2 tri-fold concept.

Hopefully, it will not just stay as a concept this time and becomes ready for the mass market real soon. We just have to wait and see as innovation never stops — much like how TECNO continues to push boundaries beyond tech.

After all, the Chinese uprising brand has delivered wallet-friendly sets of flippables and foldables for two years now.

Maybe this is the Ultimate sign for the company to battle the likes of HUAWEI and Samsung, especially now that the Korean household brand is planning to unveil the upcoming Galaxy G Fold real soon — which is said to be a tri-foldable phone, also with two inward-folding displays.
