Despite having the first-mover advantage in the foldable smartphone category, Samsung seems to have hit the wall with innovation. Since releasing the first Galaxy Fold in 2019, it has refined the design and stuck to it while not bringing much novelty to the table.
Meanwhile, Chinese competitors have pushed the boundaries—OnePlus introduced the nearly creaseless Open in 2023, Huawei unveiled the trifold Mate X in 2024, and OPPO is now making waves with the ultra-slim Find N5 in 2025.
However, new CAD renders shared by Android Headlines, in collaboration with trusted tipster Onleaks, suggest that Samsung could finally be catching up to speed with the competition in terms of hardware — if not trying to get ahead of it.
According to the renders, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 is likely to be 4.5 mm thick when unfolded and 9.5 mm thick when folded (including the camera bump). This is a big jump from the Galaxy Z Fold6, which is at 12.1 mm thickness when folded and closer to the Galaxy Z Fold SE at 10.6 mm.
What else to expect from the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7?
While the most noticeable upgrade is its slimmer profile, Android Headlines reports that Samsung could also introduce a larger inner display—potentially the biggest in the foldable segment.
The report says that the Galaxy Z Fold7 will feature an 8.2-inch inner display and a 6.5-inch cover display. Currently, the OPPO Find N5 has the biggest display on a book-style foldable at 8.12 inches.
The dimensions are also likely to be 158.4 x 143.1 x 4.5mm, making the outer display slightly wider than last year. This would make the smartphone more comfortable and natural to use even when folded.
Additionally, the device could be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, the same chip that powers the Galaxy S25 series.
The battery capacity, unfortunately, could remain the same as the last few years at 4,400 mAh but with software modifications, we should be able to see a good battery life.
Given that the Galaxy Z Fold SE launched in Korea last year with a 200MP primary sensor, there’s speculation that the Galaxy Z Fold7 could feature the same this year.
The ultrawide and telephoto lenses (12MP and 10MP, respectively) are expected to remain unchanged, along with the 10MP front camera on the cover display and the 4MP under-display inner camera.
Samsung typically releases these phones about a week earlier each year. However, with the Galaxy S25 series launching slightly later this year, the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Flip7 could follow a similar timeline. Still, a mid-July launch remains the most likely timeframe.
