Spotify now lets you create and customise your own playlist covers, in-app

Spotify has just introduced a creative new feature that allows users to design custom cover art for their playlists. With over eight billion playlists already created on the platform, the update offers users the tools to make their playlists look as good as they sound, all within the app. The new Create Cover Art feature, currently in Beta, lets users personalise playlist covers using text, background colours, gradients, stickers, and their own images. Spotify’s creative team collaborated with artists Jun Ioneda, Sam Lyon, James Marshall, and Shivani Parasnis to design, illustrate and craft the tool’s sticker collection – something they intend to expand on with other artists in the near future.

To create the feature, Spotify partnered with visual creators and artists behind some of the world’s most iconic album art, including Imogene, the creative mind behind Charli XCX’s tour visuals; Adrian Hernandez, known for designing Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti album cover; and Cey Adams, the designer for The Notorious B.I.G., Beastie Boys, and JAY-Z. The music streamer also worked with music artists like Clairo, Jamie xx, and Arlo Parks, who create their own playlists on the platform.

Spotify tells us that it collaborated with these artists to learn from their personal experiences, and direct those learnings towards “ensuring we had the right elements included in the feature, so that users are able to express themselves and personalise their playlists like never before”.

The feature has launched now and will be available to Spotify listeners in English across 65 markets. To start, users can access the Create Cover Art tool through the Spotify mobile app by selecting one of their playlists, or creating a new one, and then tapping the context menu to find the option. From there, they can experiment with text, images, and other design elements before sharing their creation. And, rest assured, Spotify stresses that no AI was used in the development of this tool.
