Tecno Camon phone is coming soon with RGBW sensor, in-house image processing algorithm

A few months ago Tecno announced that it is working with Samsung to develop and RGBW sensor (dubbed ISOCELL GWB). Today the company unveiled a few more details about its plans to build high quality mobile cameras – the algorithm to process the RGBW data from the sensor will be developed by Tecno itself.

The 64 MP RGBW sensor will debut with a Camon phone. The addition of a White sub-pixel will allow the sensor to capture 60% more of the incoming light, compared to a traditional RGB sensor. Tecno will also use a pricier but more effective Glass+Plastic lens assembly, which passes 30% more light through to the sensor compared to an all-plastic lens.

In total, the GWB sensor in the upcoming Camon phone will capture twice as much light as a traditional sensor of the same size (though we still don’t know the size of the GWB). Of course, using an RGBW filter means that Tecno can’t reuse algorithms designed for RGB, so the company is developing new ones. It thinks it has found a way to capture human features and skin tones more accurately using the new system.

Pan Xuebao, VP and Head of R&D at Samsung Electronics, said: “This new development was created based on user feedback and an effort to bring greater depth and diversity to the images and videos we take everyday, bringing us one step closer to the dream of delivering DSLR-grade photography into the hands of consumers.”

Recently Oppo launched phones with an RGBW sensor in the selfie camera – the Sony IMX709 used in Reno7 and Find X5 models using proprietary image processing. This kind of thing is seen as a competitive advantage and not something shared with other Android makers and Tecno wants to have an edge in smartphone camera quality as well.
