Found in the Android beta version 2.25.4.3, WhatsApp is planning a new change to the group chats. The new feature is currently rolling out to limited testers via the Google Play Beta Program.
The latest group members label feature in WhatsApp will enable users to define their group chat contacts with their specific designations or roles. These names will add more clarity to contacts’ roles, their positions, or responsibilities in the group.
Don’t worry, as these labels will only remain in the group chat, without affecting the contact’s name in your phone address book. This eventually ensures privacy across different conversations.
Interestingly, if a user gets a specific role or label in one group, it won’t be carried to other groups.
Add Member label description reads:
“Share more about yourself or your role in this group with a member label. It can be seen by all current and future members of this group. For example: Parent, Coach, Chairperson.”
The feature offers more personalization to group chat members. WhatsApp will likely bring this capability to more users via a stable update.
