SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 9 LEAK REVEALS SUDDEN CANCELLATION

The Galaxy Note 9 will change a lot more than critics are expecting. That said, it seems Samsung is taking criticism very personally as a new leak from within the company’s supply chain reveals the Galaxy Note is facing a sudden and unexpected cancellation…

According to popular Korean site The Bell, Samsung is seriously considering scrapping the Galaxy Note brand completely. What’s more, The Bell’s source says this is something Samsung has been considering for well over a year.

Reasons behind such a drastic move are given as deteriorating profitability due to smartphone saturation, and delayed upgrade cycles as customers hold onto their devices for longer. In fact, The Bell states that the fate of the Galaxy Note range largely depends on customers’ response to the Galaxy Note 9. If sales are underwhelming, then the writing is on the wall.

A cancellation would see the Galaxy Note “merged” with the Galaxy S range, but there’s no detail on how this takes place. Would there still be a model with an S Pen or would the merger see the Galaxy S ‘Plus’ model replace the Note range since its mass market audience is unlikely to need the stylus which both separates the Note and gives it a hardcore fanbase.

Either way, I think such a move would be madness.

Firstly, in an era where only Apple appears to command smartphone loyalty the one exception to that rule is the Note brand. I can’t think of another Android range which could survive the exploding Galaxy Note 7 scandal and Note devotees are famously loyal.

Secondly, the Galaxy Note gives Samsung a useful ‘tick-tock’ release cycle. The company can split advancements between the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note ranges, test and refine them for the next release. For example, the Galaxy S range got the ‘bezel-less’ design first, the Galaxy Note range got dual cameras first. A split release strategy lets Samsung remain on the cutting edge throughout the year.

Last but not least, this strategy means Samsung customers alienated by one release are often prepared to wait six months to see if the company can tempt them with the next one. If that gap became a year, I doubt they’d stick around.

But perhaps the most frustrating aspect to all of this is Samsung placing everything on the Galaxy Note 9. If Samsung really wanted to see if this range deserves saving, then perhaps when designing the Galaxy Note 9 it could have tried harder…much harder.
