NOKIA LUMIA SERIES CAME TO LIFE 10 YEARS AGO

Ten years ago, Nokia fundamentally changed the history of smartphones and started a revolution. The change started with Elop’s Burning Memo. This memo practically killed Symbian overnight and send people running towards Android and iPhone, which helped those platforms develop further. Nokia was then in a difficult position, but instead of shutting the operation down, the Finns launched Nokia 808 PureView, announced Nokia N9 in September and declared the complete transition of the smartphone business two months later.

In November 2011, Nokia Lumia 800 was announced, which is a Windows 7 smartphone based on a format of lovely Nokia N9. It was a great phone, the same as Nokia N9, but the software was something completely different from what a user of Nokia phones was used to. Symbian or MeeGo were ready to use right out of the box, while WP was slightly different and needed apps to make it fun to use. Nokia did invest a lot in the extra app software, but not long after Lumia 800, Windows Phone 7 came to an end. I remember Lumia 800 being the first phone I ever reviewed professionally for the Croatian mob.hr.

After that, Nokia Lumia 920 opened up the most exciting period of Nokia smartphones running Windows Phone. The platform itself was going well and Microsoft even improved it with version WP8.1, but Nokia gave the magic ingredients with a special camera, navigation and of course hardware. While other manufacturers like HTC, Samsung, LG were making WP devices, Nokia was giving all the best ones. Nokia dominated all the price segments. You could see the best camera phone till today, Lumia 1520, Lumia 925, Lumia 820, Lumia 720, Lumia 520, 620, etc. The platform running those was kind of boring since it performed the same on the top-notch and entry-level hardware. Shortly after, Risto Siilasmaa shook hands with Steve Balmer, Nokia House was turned to Microsoft house and Nokia was back in the networking Business.

There have been a few good Lumia models like Lumia 930 or Lumia 730, but soon after Microsoft took completely over, screwed the WP OS completely, and the most exciting things that came out of its smartphone department were Lumia 950 XL and Lumia 640 XL. And that was the end of an era. Well, the only thing that kept Nokia name alive were feature phones, and those are still thriving today.

It was fun looking at Nokia giving its best, launching hardware and software that are still considered way ahead of its time. And here we are still bringing back the sweet memory, 10 years after.
